We have to begin with Antoni Gaudi probably the most recognisable creative individual to leave his mark upon the city of Barcelona. A Spanish architect from Catalonia known for his Catalan Modernism style. Gaudi’s work is so unique it is instantly recognisable and his inspirations of architecture, nature and religion are very clear to see throughout his many works. His use of bold, contemporary colour, eclectic designs and use of re-purposed materials make Antoni Gaudi’s work spectacular to see.
Barcelona is home to many of Gaudi’s accomplishments but the most famous of all is the Basilica Sagrada Familia. A stunningly beautiful design of ornate craftsmanship and architectural construction. A combination of Gothic and Art Nouveau style creates an architectural masterpiece that is powerful and dramatic. Did you know that the Basilica Sagrada Familia is still not finished even to this day?
The interior of the Basilica is as equally as dramatic, detailed and impressive as the exterior. An architectural performance of line, shape, contrasts and light awaits you, and it has to be seen to be believed. No matter how much you know about Antoni Gaudi or whether you are an avid artist or not, this piece of work is spectacular and is a must see when visiting the city.
Gaudi’s work flows freely around the city like liquid and all are colourful, bold and add drama to the surroundings, enhancing the vibrancy of the city. Casa Milà, also known as La Pedrera or ‘The Stone Quarry’, is a building that is very different from the many other works to be seen. Casa Mila is subtle in colour with highly ornate decorative details in black that contrast the stone like appearance. Casa Mila is used daily but can still be admired and don’t forget the views from the top.
Casa Batlló is a mesmerising piece of modernist architecture that has an almost dragon-like appearance due to its layered roof tiles that arch out like the back of a sleeping dragon. This is a bold, dramatic design using re-purposed ceramic tiles that contrast against the bone like sculptural details of the balconies.
Park Güell, a public park full of gardens and sculptures by this colourful artist is a great place to spend some time relaxing and reflecting on the many works of Antoni Gaudi. Along with views across Barcelona, the vibrancy of this outdoor space is sure to liven up your day.
We mustn’t forget that although Gaudi has left his very impressive mark upon the city there are many other fabulous masterpieces to be seen while visiting Barcelona. One of the most impressive collections of Pablo Picasso’s work can be seen at the Museu Picasso. The museum is home to two of his early pieces ‘The First Communion’ and ‘Science and Charity’. Spanish artist Picasso loved the city of Barcelona and the relationship between the two is evident throughout his works.
The Fundació Joan Miró honours the work of the artist, Joan Miro, himself and is a centre for modern art. The bold, abstract and contemporary architectural design of the building is art that draws you into the great works of this very colourful, daring and contemporary Spanish artist.
Other great places to include on your visit are the MACBA – Museu d’Art Contemorani, MNAC – Museu Nacional d’Art de Catalunya and Fundació Antoni Tàpies.
