Porto by First Class rail & return by air

Perhaps most famous for its fortified wine, Porto boasts many attractions including a UNESCO-listed medieval centre.

 

7 night / 8 day holiday by First Class rail (where available) including 4 nights in Porto and overnight stays in each San Sebastian, Madrid and Vigo and including a scheduled British Airways flight from Porto to London is from £1,395 per person (based on 2 people travelling together in low season).

Your Porto by First Class rail & returning by air Holiday Itinerary

Day 1 – By rail to Spain

Your holiday begins as you stroll into the beautifully restored London St. Pancras station.

Take your time to appreciate the splendour of magnificent glass roof, then sit back, relax and watch the countryside swish past as you travel by Eurostar to Paris at speeds of up to 186mph.

Enjoy the light meal and drinks served on board in Standard Premier Class (Eurostar’s 1st class for leisure travellers).

On arrival at the Gare du Nord your private taxi transfer takes you across Paris to the Montparnasse station to continue your journey by TGV through France and into Spain.

You travel through the Spanish countryside before arriving in Hendaye. Here, you change trains for a final time today and take a local train (payable locally) to the attractive city of San Sebastian. Here you spend tonight at the comfortable Hotel Room Mate Gorka (4 star).

Day 2 – San Sebastian to Madrid

After breakfast this morning, it will soon be time to return to the railway station for your First Class journey south from San Sebastian to Spain’s capital city, Madrid.  

When you arrive in Madrid make your own way to your hotel for the night, the elegant Hotel Liabeny (4 star), ideally situated in the heart of the Spanish capital. This evening you may wish to sample one of Madrid’s many fine restaurants

Day 3 - Madrid to Vigo

This morning after a leisurely breakfast you may have time to further explore Madrid. Then make your way back to Madrid Chamartín railway station for your First Class journey west to Vigo. On arrival at Vigo Urzaiz railway station, make your own way to your hotel for the next night, the welcoming, NH Collection Hotel Vigo (4 star). 

After settling in, you may choose to explore the port or sample one of the wonderful restaurants for dinner. 

Day 4 - Through Spain and into Portugal

After an early breakfast this morning, it will soon be time to make your way Vigo Guixar railway station for the short journey (standard class only) from Vigo to Portugal’s second largest city, Porto.

On arrival at Porto’s Campanha railway station, make your own arrangements to your highly-rated 4-star hotel for the next four nights. The rest of the day is yours to relax or explore. 

Days 5 - 7 - Discovering Porto

Perhaps most famous for its fortified wine, Porto boasts many attractions including a UNESCO-listed medieval centre.

Enjoy three full days to explore the city. Perhaps visit the imposing Sé Cathedral and admire the panoramic view from its terrace over the Douro below. Other popular options include the Pálacio de Cristal gardens with its verdant lawns and wonderful botanical collection, and the striking Pálacio de Bolsa. There are also many wine cellars in the city, should you wish to sample the famous local produce.

Day 8 - Porto to London by air - Homeward bound

This morning after a final breakfast at your hotel and some last minute sightseeing, it will soon be time to pack your bags and head to the airport.

Here you board your scheduled flight back to London with British Airways. As you head through the clouds, the landscape below is a blur at times, though memories abide as you return to London ahead of the final leg of your journey home.

SAN SEBASTIAN 

A 5-minute walk from the beach on Shell Bay, the refined Hotel Room Mate Gorka (4 star) is located on a city park square, 2 km from 1893 Miramar Palace and 3 km from Urgull, a hill with panoramic views. MADRID 

The elegant and distinguished Hotel Liabeny (4 star) is ideally situated in the centre of Madrid, just 200 meters from Puerta del Sol – Madrid’s most famous and central square. The hotel offers modern facilities such as a gym with sauna, a bar and lounge area, and an excellent selection of Mediterranean and International cuisine served in the Restaurante Sensaciones (Sensations Restaurant). The dining room also serves a Buffet-Style breakfast, where guests can find a large selection of pastries, cold and hot dishes and the famous home-made churros. The comfortable rooms come with free Wi-Fi, flat-screen TVs and minibars. They also include desks and chairs, while upgraded rooms add separate sitting areas and whirlpool tubs. Additional amenities include an upscale restaurant, as well as a bar serving snacks and light meals. There’s also a fitness center.

PORTO

The stylish and elegant Hotel Exe Almada (4 star) is ideally located in the historical centre of Porto, which has become a UNESCO world heritage site. Comfortable rooms include, WIFI, Air conditioning, a hair dryer, LCD TV and a safety deposit box. There is a buffet breakfast served daily and a bar/café for refreshments.
