Lisbon by First Class rail & return by air

The Portuguese capital of Lisbon is a delight to explore, with its Gothic cathedrals, majestic monasteries and quaint museums, all part of the colourful cityscape.

7 night / 8 day holiday by First Class rail (where available) including 4 nights in Lisbon and overnight stays in each San Sebastian, Madrid and Vigo and including a scheduled British Airways flight from Lisbon to London is from £1,495 per person (based on 2 people travelling together in low season).

Your Lisbon by First Class rail & returning by air Holiday Itinerary

Day 1 – By rail to Spain

Your holiday begins as you stroll into the beautifully restored London St. Pancras station.

Take your time to appreciate the splendour of magnificent glass roof, then sit back, relax and watch the countryside swish past as you travel by Eurostar to Paris at speeds of up to 186mph.

Enjoy the light meal and drinks served on board in Standard Premier Class (Eurostar’s 1st class for leisure travellers).

On arrival at the Gare du Nord your private taxi transfer takes you across Paris to the Montparnasse station to continue your journey by TGV through France and into Spain.

You travel through the Spanish countryside before arriving in Hendaye. Here, you change trains for a final time today and take a local train (payable locally) to the attractive city of San Sebastian. Here you spend tonight at the comfortable Hotel Room Mate Gorka (4 star).

Day 2 – San Sebastian to Madrid

After breakfast this morning, it will soon be time to return to the railway station for your First Class journey south from San Sebastian to Spain’s capital city, Madrid.  

When you arrive in Madrid make your own way to your hotel for the night, the elegant Hotel Liabeny (4 star), ideally situated in the heart of the Spanish capital. This evening you may wish to sample one of Madrid’s many fine restaurants

Day 3 - Madrid to Vigo

This morning after a leisurely breakfast you may have time to further explore Madrid. Then make your way back to Madrid Chamartín railway station for your First Class journey west to Vigo. On arrival at Vigo Urzaiz railway station, make your own way to your hotel for the next night, the welcoming, NH Collection Hotel Vigo (4 star). 

After settling in, you may choose to explore the port or sample one of the wonderful restaurants for dinner. 

Day 4 - Through Spain and into Portugal

After an early breakfast this morning, it will soon be time to make your way Vigo Guixar railway station for the short journey (standard class only) from Vigo to Portugal’s second largest city, Porto. 

On arrival into Porto, you board your final train of the day to the capital of Portugal, the charming city of Lisbon. Make your own arrangements to your highly-rated 4-star hotel for the next four nights, The Hotel Britania Art Deco (4 star). The rest of the day is yours to relax or explore. 

Days 5 - 7 - Discovering Lisbon

You have three full days to discover the delights of Lisbon. You might like to start by strolling through some of Lisbon’s most interesting areas, the Baixa and Alfama districts. Some of the highlights include the Rossio and Praça do Comércio plaza’s, the imposing 12th-century Sé Cathedral and Lisbon castle, which offers spectacular panoramic views over central Lisbon.

You may prefer to take a trip to the pretty Belém district, situated to the west of Lisbon and home to open grand monuments and carefully maintained parks, that sit along the banks of the Rio Tejo.

Alternatively you might like to take a tour of the UNESCO World Heritage site Torre de Belem, a 16th century square tower with a polygonal bastion, facing the river Tagus. In the evenings, choose from a range of restaurants Lisbon has to offer for dining options.

Day 8 - Lisbon to London by air - Homeward bound

This morning after a final breakfast at your hotel and some last minute sightseeing, it will soon be time to pack your bags and head to the airport.

Here you board your scheduled flight back to London with British Airways. As you head through the clouds, the landscape below is a blur at times, though memories abide as you return to London ahead of the final leg of your journey home.

SAN SEBASTIAN 

A 5-minute walk from the beach on Shell Bay, the refined Hotel Room Mate Gorka (4 star) is located on a city park square, 2 km from 1893 Miramar Palace and 3 km from Urgull, a hill with panoramic views. MADRID

LISBON
