About the Belmond British Pullman

The Belmond British Pullman takes its name from George Mortimer Pullman, an American, who in 1864 built The Pioneer, the first railway carriage designed with true comfort for the passenger. The later creation of the Pullman Car Company in 1882 led to his domination of luxury train travel in Britain from that time onwards.

These luxury day cars formed the train that would take passengers from London to the English Channel ports as part of the famous Venice Simplon-Orient-Express, as well as travelling the length and breadth of Great Britain.

The history of the train lies in the individual carriages which today form the Belmond British Pullman. The carriages have changed hands many times during their lifetime and bring with them stories and events which give them their unique character.

This morning after a leisurely breakfast it is just a short walk to London’s Victoria station.
Here you join the beautiful Belmond British Pullman luxury train on a delightful journey to Britain’s best-preserved Georgian city.

Immerse yourself in the beautiful art deco carriages of the vintage train, each one boasting its own distinguished history and decor. Savour a welcome Bellini cocktail and a fabulous 3 course brunch at a table set with pristine white linen, specially commissioned china and sparkling cut glassware. Sit back and relax as the liveried stewards take care of your every need. Enjoy the changing views through your picture window as the train winds its way into the West Country, whilst you enjoy morning tea or coffee on board.
At around midday the British Pullman heads into Bath Spa station. Here you will have plenty of free-time to discover Bath and its most famous sights.

If you are feeling energetic, then start your visit with an ascent up the spiral staircase of the historic Bath Abbey on a Tower Tour (payable locally) and enjoy breath-taking views over the city, as well as a behind-the-scenes peek at the church’s clock face and bells.  Make sure to allow time to visit the picturesque Royal Crescent and its magnificent Georgian terrace.  You can experience life in Georgian Bath at No. 1 Royal Crescent, a townhouse built in 1767, now a museum revealing the lives of servants and their masters in the eighteenth century or head to the Jane Austen Centre and learn about the life and times of Bath’s most famous resident.  Art lovers can explore the Holbourne Museum with its mix of fine and decorative art housed in a Grade I listed building with contemporary extension, or head to the Victoria Art Gallery and experience stunning collections from Turner and Gainsborough, as well as striking modern art.
