Legendary Danube Cruise: HOLIDAY ITINERARY

Day 1 – London to Nuremberg and onwards to your luxury 5 star cruise ship

Your holiday begins as you arrive at London St Pancras International. Take the time to admire the “cathedral of steam” before you join the Eurostar and travel to Brussels. Enjoy the light meal and drinks served at your seat as you reach speeds of up to 186 mph during the journey.

In Brussels you change trains and continue into Germany, travelling via Frankfurt to Nuremberg.

Here you make your way to your floating hotel for the next seven nights.

Take the time to settle in ahead of this evening’s Welcome Dinner. The ship remains in Nuremberg overnight.

Day 2 – Nuremberg

Make the most of a day to discover Nuremberg on a choice of three excursions.

You could take a guided tour through Nuremberg’s beautiful medieval city, showcasing the Imperial Castle, famous town wall and the legendary fountain of the Market Square.

Or you may prefer to take in the city’s most important WWII sites, including the enormous Documentation Center Nazi Party Rally Grounds.

This excursion also visits the Nuremberg Trials Memoriam, and Courtroom 600, if the courtroom is not in session.

Alternatively, you can taste traditional Franconian specialties by sampling famously delicious Nuremburger Bratwurst, Rot bier (red beer) and lebkuchen (gingerbread).

Back on board the ship, you cruise through the Main-Danube Canal, a man-made marvel, on your way to Regensburg.

Day 3 – Regensburg

Explore one of Germany’s best preserved medieval cities Regensburg on a guided walking tour showcasing the city’s architectural highlights, including the Old Town Hall and the Porta Praetoria.

Alternatively, you can sample some Bavarian specialties—such as beer, sausage and pretzels.

If you’re feeling energetic, perhaps join a bike tour to Walhalla where you will see the Neoclassical white marble temple inspired by the Parthenon in Athens.

Regensburg

Day 4 – Passau

Today you arrive in Passau, an attractive German town on the Austrian border.

Enjoy a walking tour along Passau’s cobblestone streets admiring the Gothic and Italian Baroque architecture and St. Stephen’s Cathedral.

For guests looking for a more active morning, you can choose between a guided bike tour along the Danube River, or a guided hike up to the Veste Oberhaus Fortress for panoramic views overlooking three rivers.

Later you return to the ship and continue into Austria, heading for Linz.

Day 5 – Melk and the Wachau Valley

This morning you reach Melk, crowned by its magnificent Benedictine Abbey, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of Europe’s largest and most revered monasteries.

Discover more of this impressive edifice (pictured) on a guided tour, or alternatively, you can join a guided bike tour that takes you through the UNESCO-designated Wachau Valley.

Otherwise, you may prefer to go on a walking tour along Dürnstein’s cobblestone streets to the Baroque Stiftskirche, famed church tower.

Later in the day, relax on board and take in the beautiful scenery as you set sail through the vineyard-rich Wachau Valley.

Day 6 – Vienna

Your destination today is Vienna, the iconic Austrian capital.

The “City of Waltzes” offers a treasure trove of gems and on your city tour, you will see several of them, including the majestic Opera House and the former Imperial Palace of the Habsburgs.

This tour concludes in Vienna’s historic city centre, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and then afterwards, visit the grand St. Stephen’s Cathedral.

For a more active exploration of the area, take a guided bicycle ride that includes opportunities to see these same sights as well as the majestic Ringstrasse, Vienna’s famed ring road, lined with grand buildings, monuments and parks.

Your afternoon is free to explore this magnificent city at your own pace.

Day 7 – Budapest

Having travelled into Hungary overnight, today you arrive in its glorious capital city, Budapest.

Known as the “Queen of the Danube”, Budapest enchants all who visit. Your city tour here begins with visit to the vibrant Great Market Hall brimming with vendors selling everything from food to souvenirs.

The remainder of this tour takes you to both the Buda (hilly) and the Pest (flat) sides of the river.

As an alternative choice, hike up to Castle Hill for breathtaking views of the city below.

Spend your last evening on board cruising around the famed Parliament Building as the city turns on all her dazzling lights.

Day 8 – Disembark in Budapest

This morning you bid farewell to the ship as you disembark and take the train to Munich.

Here you spend tonight at the highly-rated  Eurostars Book Hotel (4 star), conveniently located close to Munich’s main station..

Day 9 – Munich to London – homeward bound

This morning after breakfast you return to Munich’s main station for the start of your journey home.

Firstly you travel on the high-speed ICE service to Mannheim where you change trains and continue to Paris aboard another stylish ICE train.

Arriving at Paris Gare de l’Est station, you walk the short distance to the Gare du Nord where you connect with the Eurostar service to London.

Then let the train take the strain as you stretch out and savour the meal and drinks included in your Standard Premier service.

At 186mph the landscape is a blur at times, though memories abide as you return to London St. Pancras International for the final leg of your journey home.
