Let the holiday mood take over this morning as you stroll through the glorious St. Pancras International station and board the Eurostar service for Lille. Unwind in the comfort of your Standard Premier Class (Eurostar’s 1st Class) seat and enjoy drinks and a light meal, as your high speed service takes you away from the bustle of early morning London. You travel through the patchwork countryside of south-east England and into France and Lille Europe where you change to the TGV service for your onward journey south to Provence.
On arrival at Avignon TGV station, change trains for a final time today and board your regional service for the short journey to Avignon Centre. From here, make your own way to your hotel for 4 nights, the charming and centrally located Hotel de l’Horloge (4 star).
You have three full days in Avignon to visit the fascinating walled old town and stroll among the maze of medieval streets and tree-lined squares. No visit to Avignon would be complete without seeing the Palais des Papes (payable locally) and the Pont St. Bénezet, the broken bridge, made famous in the children’s song. From your hotel next to the Place de l’Horloge you can watch the world go by from this attractive central square or visit the impressive Hôtel de Ville and Opera House, decorated with statues of Corneille and Molière.
For a different perspective on the city, you may wish to take a short trip on one of the river cruises which depart from Avignon. Perhaps head out into the charming Provençal countryside with its hilltop villages or to one of the nearby towns which are accessible by train from Avignon’s central railway station, such as Nîmes, Arles or Orange. Alternatively, you may like to visit the striking Pont du Gard aqueduct, a stunning symbol of Roman engineering, and a UNESCO World Heritage site.
You return to Avignon Centre station this morning, you take the short regional service to Avignon TGV station and board your TGV service to Lille where you bid farewell to Provence.
Unwind in your comfortable 1st Class seat as you are whisked north through France. You change trains in Lille and speed through northern France and back into England before your Standard Premier Class service arrives into London for the last stage of your journey home.
