Surrounded by rural countryside on this picturesque stretch of the River Danube, the first thing you’ll see as you approach Esztergom is the enormous basilica that crowns this pretty town.
With an impressive history stretching back to the birth of the nation’s first king, St Stephen, in 975, Esztergom has been the seat of Roman Catholicism in Hungary for over 1,000 years.
Delve into the past at Esztergom Castle where continuous excavations since the 1930 have uncovered a treasure trove of Romanesque, Gothic, Renaissance and Ottoman styles, and head to the central plaza, the town’s Medieval marketplace walled with baroque, Rococo and Neoclassical buildings.
As views from the river go, Budapest is pretty hard to beat. Straddling both sides of the water, the ‘Pearl of the Danube’ is chock-full of grand imperial buildings, dramatic history and contrasting scenery.
On the Buda side of the Danube, you’ll discover a landscape of rolling hills and gloriously grandiose buildings, the impressive Hungarian Houses of Parliament amongst them.
While over in former Pest, you’ll find a more lively, bourgeois atmosphere.
In the evening. head for the sun deck and enjoy an included drink admiring the lights of the city beneath the stars from your central mooring on the river – a wonderful experience.
Next morning, with another day in Budapest, why not stroll through Margaret Island. Home to a lovely Japanese garden and musical fountain, it’s a tranquil park sat in the middle of the Danube River.
Or opt to join your expert local guide on a city tour of Budapest as you get to know the city’s past and present. Highlights include, the Matthias Church and the Fisherman’s Bastion where you’ll see the best view of the city.
Sometimes on a river cruise, it’s the unexpected stops that surprise you and Krems an der Donau may well be just that place.
Krems, as it’s known to its friends, is a small town that punches well above its weight both culturally and scenically. You can opt to join an excursion and see its quaint churches and museums and from where you continue to Durnstein and onto the majestic Melk Abbey overlooking the Danube further up river.
If you stay on board ship, enjoy the Wachau Valley, a picture-perfect stretch of Danube river valley between Melk and Krems. As you gently cruise, you’ll see quaint towns dotting the Danube backed by lush countryside and vineyards. We suggest grabbing a book and reclining up on the sun deck as you meander through the stunning Wachau Valley. The ship arrives at Melk at 12.30.
This evening, enjoy a farewell dinner on board as you sail north towards the Austrian border.
Arrive in Engelhartzell at 0700. Disembark after breakfast, transfer to Passau and take the train to Cologne.
You stay overnight at the Hotel Mondial am Dom (4 star) located close to the station and the UNESCO recognised icon, the mighty gothic cathedral, on a bed and breakfast basis.
The rest of the day is free to explore at leisure Cologne’s many attractions, including the old town, chocolate museum and the cathedral.
This morning after breakfast you return to Cologne station for the start of your journey home.
Firstly you travel on the high-speed ICE service to Brussels where you change trains and board the Eurostar service to London.
Then let the train take the strain as you stretch out and savour the light (cold) meal and drinks included in your Standard Premier service.
At 186mph the landscape is a blur at times, though memories abide as you return to London St. Pancras International for the final leg of your journey home.
