Your holiday begins in the heart of London at the magnificent London St Pancras International station. Take the time to admire its sweeping glass roof – one of the largest enclosed spaces in the world – before boarding the Eurostar. Then sit back and relax as the train whisks you across the countryside of south east England and through the Channel Tunnel into France – reaching speeds of up to 186 mph. Enjoy a light meal and drinks, served at your seat, as you continue to Paris.
On arrival at Paris Gare du Nord, it is a short transfer by private taxi to the Gare de Montparnasse for your onward journey by TGV southwards through the ever-changing French scenery to the dynamic city of Bordeaux.
On arrival, make your way to the highly-rated Best Western Premier Hotel Bayonne Etche Ona de Bordeaux (4 star) situated in the city centre, for a three-night stay.
Enjoy two full days to discover the delights of Bordeaux. Perhaps start by exploring the UNESCO World Heritage old town, which is renowned as being “an outstanding urban and architectural ensemble” of the 18th century. Growing gentrification has resulted in a blend of neoclassical grandeur and modern innovation, which has created a fascinating city. Explore the best of this transformation along the Riverfront, where once old warehouses have become jaunty bars and cafes. The Riverfront leads onto the impressive Pont de Pierre (Stone Bridge) and from here you can experience spectacular views across the river and quayside at dusk.
The Place de la Bourse marks the heart of the old town centre, from where you can take a stroll along the ancient streets, featuring a mixture of bistros, boutiques and vintage shops. The two best museums in the city are the Musée d’Aquitaine and Musée des Beaux Arts, which offer an insight into the history of Bordeaux and a star-studded collection of European art respectively. Alternatively you might like to relax in the Jardin Public, a beautiful park with a botanical garden and Natural History Museum framed by lovely honey-coloured 18th century townhouses.
This morning after breakfast make your way back to Bordeaux station for your First Class journey to Paris. You travel north on the superfast TGV before you arrive at Montparnasse station. Watch the rolling hills flash past or reminisce on the wonders of the past few days.
On arrival in Paris you are transferred by private taxi to the Gare du Nord for the last part of your journey. Let the train take the strain as you stretch out and relax over a light meal and drinks in your Standard Premier Class seat. At 186mph the landscape is a blur at times, though memories abide as you return to London St. Pancras International and the final leg of your journey home.
The Best Western Premier Hotel Bayonne Etche Ona de Bordeaux (4 star) is located in the Golden Triangle of Bordeaux and comprises two 18th century houses, the Bayonne and the Etche-Ona.
